MARCO ALCALA, MD

Dr. Alcala is a sports medicine physician, nonsurgical orthopaedist, and concussion specialist. He served as the director of Sports Medicine at the Allegheny Health Network Pediatric Orthopaedic Institute in Wexford, Pennsylvania. He served as one of the team physicians for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Avonworth High School for over 10 years. He serves as the district physician for Avonworth and the North Allegheny School Districts. He is the director of Orthopaedic Training for the Family Medicine Residency Program for the Heritage Valley Health System.

Dr. Alcala received his medical degree from Saint George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He has also completed his undergraduate at Rutgers Univestiy in New Jersey. He did complete a general surgical internship at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and a second year in Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey.

Dr. Marco Alcala completed three years of a National Institute of Health research fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a published author of several articles, presented multiple abstracts for research, wrote a chapter in a medical textbook, and has given oral presentations on a variety of topics to medical audiences around the country. Dr. Alcala has received an award as a minority scholar in the field of cancer research.

After finishing his family medicine residency with the Heritage Valley Health System in Beaver, Pennsylvania, he completed his fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Here, he trained as a team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Robert Morris University men’s hockey team, the Moon High School sports teams, the River Hounds soccer team, and the Harlequins rugby team. He was also involved in professional boxing as a cut man.

While Dr. Alcala does treat all sports and musculoskeletal injuries, he has a passion for concussion management. Over the past 10 years he has developed a niche in helping patients with concussion injuries and post concussion syndrome. He has been able to help those who have been dealing with concussion-like symptoms for months or years, get a better quality of life. Because of this passion and success in this field, he has been deemed an expert in concussion management for the medical legal world and also performs independent medical evaluations on this topic. He is deeply involved with helping young athletes to adults and those that suffer from work injuries and personal injuries.

Dr. Alcala continues to speak at conferences, schools and communities about the latest sports and concussion injuries and management.

Dr. Alcala has received the Top Doctor Award in Pittsburgh for the past 4 years.

He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, the USA Boxing Association, the American Association of Family Physicians, and the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Alcala is fluent in both English and Spanish languages and can also see patients through telemedicine when they have difficulties coming to the office.
